This step is kind of tedious but important if you don't want your game to crash to desktop every minutes.
You should download and install Xcode which is free on the App Store. Click cancel. Quit instruments. Your Mac is now forced to use only one core until you put it to sleep or restart it. You'll have to do this every time you want to play unless you save very often and don't mind it crashing on you. There are thousands of mods available and still coming out for this game even today. The best places are:. Installing mods is easy. If it comes with an exe setup installer just do it the same way you updated your game and leave all the default paths.
It's just in your normal documents folder, pretty awesome huh? Check out this post for the essential mods. New players should definitely check out this post for some basics. One final tip: keep your plugins folder well organised. Only put in the essential files for the mods, take out all the readme's and jpgs! Also be careful with dependencies, you should really research everything you download to make sure you have the correct dependencies and the latest versions for the mods and be wary of doubles in your plugin folders.
That's it for now! I hope I can make some fellow Mac users happy with this post and maybe attract some new players to this game. I'm having loads of fun playing it again and I'm sure you will too! Here's the link he provided, thanks! The reason I wrote this guide, however, is that in my personal experience the game runs much smoother with this method. Also, to my understanding, the mac version doesn't support some mods and is quite buggy :. I own SimCity 4 Deluxe for Windows. When I got a shiny new iMac, I bought the Mac version of SimCity 4 as well, as I thought the iMac would be wonderful for running an old game on maximum settings.
This guide got my Windows version working wonderfully when I followed it with the exception of installing from the CDs, rather than torrented copies.

Many thanks! A problem arose, however: When I pan the camera up or down there's some horrible 'smearing'; graphics don't seem to update until I zoom in or out. Panning up leaves a trail of whatever was on the screen, smudged as horrible textures. Is there a way to overcome this or am I forced to put up with it? Or it might not. I don't get the texture smearing, although I do get some tooltip flickering, nothing too serious though.
Maybe try playing around with your in-game graphic settings? On my search for fixing the tooltip glitch I did stumble upon some advice to download and install XQuartz for Xcode to fix certain graphics issues, I think they were even talking about the 'smearing' you describe. After installing go into your wrapper settings fn-click your wrapper. I disabled it because it gave me more glitches but it might work for you. Alternatively you could try to go into "Set Screen Options" again, in your wrapper menu and play around with those settings, particularly the "Use Mac Drive instead of X11" checkbox, if that doesn't work, try the other ones.
Don't worry about fucking things up, if something goes wrong just go back and undo your settings. It's trial and error! I think I've sorted the problem out. I guess I can't be quite so greedy with my resolution. You're welcome! May your dirty industry never pollute your waters and your desirability always swing high. Sadly, my crime rating has been rising a bit since I've passed a torrent downloading ordinance. Maybe I should plop some playgrounds.
EDIT: The enter key worked. Things are a little glitchy, any adjustments of the graphic settings results in an immediate crash to desktop. I followed these steps to a T, and thank you! Then it simply sits there, black screen with an option to click OK but a clicking of the OK does nothing. Any ideas? I literally pressed enter as opposed to using the left click on my mouse. For some reason that alert sort of greys out when you click it and it just sits there. Try enter. I also played with the suggested resolution he had us put in.
I don't even get the alert now. Game plays fine. This is wonderful. I purchased a copy PC a few years ago to run on my Mac bootcamp. My Mac runs games wonderfully but this game was an utter disappointment. I had read of an issue with Intel based Macs and SC4 but never seen a definitive walk through to get it working. I'm very excited to play SC4 for the first time!! I have running SC4 Deluxe in Parallels currently.
I have the issue that it does not show different colors for the different zones. Do you have this problem with this solution, too? Hey genius-bar I am also using Parallels to play games. Have you given Wineskin a try, and how would you rate it. Is it worth changing? I run the VM with 4GB ram, and I have no trouble except for when the game opens and then tells me Origin needs to be running. I have been thinking about trying SC4 again. I have not played it in a few years. If I do I will let you know about the Zoning colours. I also use VirualBox for some things sometimes, but have never tried it for games.
I could give it a try in there as well. It is free, it just needs a Windows Install which isn't free. As far as I know VM software usually doesn't support hardware rendering since it can't access it, you're essentially creating a virtual machine which is purely software-driven. There are probably workarounds but I'm no expert and have only very limited experience with VM's.
This method also utilizes software rendering although hardware rendering should be possible and the only graphics glitch I'm experiencing is a minor tooltip flickering. Fucking Bravo, Sir! Thank you so much for putting this together.

I didn't think I'd ever be able to play it on my Mac without installing Parallels. I got stuck at step 12; my Wine won't let me click the. Any ideas why? EDIT: clicked the. Hello, First off, thank you for putting this together, I hope to get it all working on my iMac soon! I am having some trouble with Wineskin though. I can get to step 12 just fine, but when I try and run "setup. No executables found! Maybe the installer failed? All software must be installed in C: drive. I followed your instructions and I didn't see anything about a "C:Drive", is there something I am missing?
With the Mods, do we download the windows version and install it the same way on our macs? I tried to download NAM but I had some difficulties. I'm unsure on this matter. I'm a noob to simcity but I'm enjoying it despite the crazy, nonsensical traffic. Yes, if it comes with an installer you have to download the Windows version exe. When it's downloaded decompress your zip-file and open up your SimCity 4 wrapper while pressing the 'fn' button, if you don't have an fn button just right-click it, select "Show Package Contents" and open the Wineskin app you find there.
Then go ahead and click "Install Software", navigate to your plugin. It's important that you leave all the default install paths. Most smaller mods, however, just contain.

It's okay to leave everything in folders to organise it a little bit. I would strongly advise you to store all of the manuals. Thanks heaps. I worked out the. I've done some research and apparently It's extremely difficult to install on a mac now and even if you get it installed it's extremely buggy and crashes a lot.
So I think I'll just hold off on that. Did you get NAM working this way? I tried installing it, and after installing, I was unable to start SC4 anymore. This is the error in the Wine log:. Do you know if there is another way to install it, aside from using the installer where it might work? Wineskin has been busy for about 20 minutes.

I'm going to go ahead and assume this is a bad thing. The "Wineskin is currently busy If it didn't, I think I just continued as normal. I repeated the process on another Macbook and the same thing happened with the same "fix". Thanks--I still got stuck. I ended up downloading the WS8Wine1. I am not familiar with Wineskin, how do you rate it? I do a lot of work on Windows, so I bought a copy of Parallels a few years ago, which works great for work.
I also have a separate Windows VM set up for playing some games. Wineskin is great for older stuff or little apps, the advantage is that you can run them straight from MacOS. For larger apps and especially stuff like newer games I would recommend a VM like Parallels or even set up a Bootcamp partition which can take full advantage of your hardware, VM's tend to have problems with that.
I agree with boot camp being best option for gaming. The games I play work this way though, so I wouldn't rush to change. Boot camp would also require a lot of hard drive clean up. Or, if you have the mac version, all you need is the patch that Aspyr put out in 07 so it would work on Intel Macs, you can grab it here and install. As far as I know, that one is extremely buggy, not compatible with some mods, doesn't work with the BAT nightlight patch and is very slow.
I remember I did it that way a few years ago and my gaming experience was way worse compared to now. This solution, for me at least, enables me to play the game to it's fullest. I dunno, I've been playing it all night tonight not one issue other than my laptop getting crazy hot, haha. I do still get the random crash-to-desktop after a few hours, but thats sorta just a SC4 thing Both windows and mac versions. Also, wtf reddit, -2 downvote for posting a working link for a patch to get a working copy of SC4 workin on mac?
This is why I don't post much. I did have some issues with the night mods and some of the mods on Simtrop only have a Windows EXE so naturally those didn't work.

Macbook Pro, 2. I've been running it on mine and it works pretty great aside from the occasional crash. A few minutes ago I had just finished redesigning my road network and it looked great and all of a sudden it just froze. Pissed me off pretty good, but now I know to save often! Someone wrote an auto-save for the windows version, but no mac version :.
The problem appears to be when you cant update the game because there's no way to install the game I have no idea where that is referring to at all. What I mean is, if I have the mac installer and the intel patch, it still doesn't work. Because I cant run the installer. In order to use the patch I must have installed the game prior.
If there's a workaround, I'd love to know, because the PC version isn't working either. Just get Crossover and install it through that. And Enjoy :. Great guide, I learned a lot about WineSkin from this.
